We pick up the story with our hero, Tarzan, and the lovely Jane Porter married and living in Merry Ol’ England. But life suddenly isn’t merry with the abduction of Jack, their infant son. That’s right, fans; their son isn’t named, “Boy” like in the movies.This mystery adventure story takes many twists and turns, and the hunt for little Jack crosses England, lands on an African island, and falls into the jungles of Africa—but not without the fair Jane held hostage, Tarzan captured and tortured, and the entrance of old and new nefarious characters. As in the second book of this series, “The Return of Tarzan,” Esmerelda, Jane’s long-time maid makes a very small appearance, though she had a large part in the first book, “Tarzan of the Apes.” I wish she had larger parts in the second and third books. She provides great comic relief. However, in this book, Esmeralda, though mentioned briefly, has a large behind-the-scenes role.
It’s important for “Tarzan” readers to know that it’s probably best to read this series in order. I discovered that as one book ends, the second picks up the action, so these books read like a long epic. Bravo for that! We see in this book, the characters, specifically Nikolas Rokoff, evil brother of Countess Olga that we met in the previous story is a major player. Yet, we also get a cast of new bad guys: More Russians, Swedes, and a Chinese man.
This was an alright book, with the same basic themes I found in the two previous ones; the locations and names might be new, but still in all, the stories are similar.
You might like to know that Tarzan battled many different wild beasts in this story and has a friend in Sheeta, the black panther. However, I believe the author, Edgar Rice Burroughs, used a play on words in his title, “The Beasts of Tarzan” to not only denote the wild animals, but the evil men who took him on the chase through the jungle of Africa.
Finally, I’ll end with two quotes that continue to show the juxtaposition of Tarzan-Lord Greystoke-John Clayton’s appearance and manners:
“John Clayton, Lord Greystoke—he who had been "Tarzan of the Apes"—sat in silence in the apartments of his friend, Lieutenant Paul D'Arnot, in Paris, gazing meditatively at the toe of his immaculate boot.” Natty dresser, he.
And when Tarzan returned to the jungle to search for his son, “Could his fellow-peers of the House of Lords have seen him then they would have held up their noble hands in holy horror.” He adapts to his wild environment.

I am really happy that I found the Tarzan adventures in this ebook format; it makes for easy reading access.👌
WHEN I WAS IN JR HIGH SCHOOL STARTED READING THE BURROUGHS BOOKS BUT SOME OF THEM WERE CENSORED BY THE SCHOOL LIBRARIES BECAUSE THEY WERE QUESTIONABLE MORALS. I PURCHASED MY OWN COPIES IN PAPERBACK TO READ AN UNCENCORED COPY. I THEN REREAD THEM WHEN I FINISHED MY LUNCH AND WAITED FOR MY NEXT CLASS TO START. LIKE THE TITLE AN OLD FRIEND. WHEN HOMELESS HAD TO SELL ALL THE BOOKS SO NOW I AM TRYING TO REBUILD MY LIBRARY AGAIN.
I have been a long time fan of Clive Cussler' s Dirk Pitt stories. I find that the Edgar Rice Burroughs Tarzan series are every bit as exciting and gripping even though written decades before the Cussler books. I can hardly wait to get into the next book in the series.
I like Tarzan books as an escape. I didn't mind the sequence of the gorillas fighting and Tarzan trying to make an alliance. He treats animals and people with dignity and respect until given a reason to do otherwise. Just knew the villains would be Rokoff and Paulivitch and they would wind up on a jungle island or continent. Tarzan was too easily fooled by his trusting nature and naivety. We can all be fooled but hopefully it would be on the 2nd or 3rd try in future books or more puzzles to solve.
This is thrilling and interesting. Be warned all the Tarzan series are very racist! You wouldn't know by the movies, but the books really highlight what people thought about other cultures during this time. I still gave it a good review because it's interesting to read these books and see what the values were during this time, plus it's a compelling, fast paced adventure book that is just good fun to read.
Great storytelling. I'm surprised I've not encountered many who are even familiar with the fact that there are about two dozen Tarzan books. Great storytelling. Thrilling. Killing. Blood-spilling. Also, uplifting. Tarzan confronts his noble Lord Graystoke self vs his animal instinctive youth. That tension makes the story more gripping. You'll be cheering for him and booing at his antagonists, Rokoff and Paulvitch. Easy and fun reads
I started reading Edgar Rice Burroughs novels a few years back with the John Carter of Mars series. Loved those books and changed gears to Tarzan. Fell in love with the Tarzan novels then, and this book was no different. I love his characters, his writing style, and his imagination. Have since read several other Edgar Rice Burroughs stories and am consistently pleased and entertained with each story I read. Whenever I am wondering what book I should pick up next, I know I can always encounter a good choice with any Tarzan book or Edgar Rice Burroughs creation!
